What does a construction company actually do? Students discover training opportunities at HERING

What does concrete feel like? Which careers are available in a modern construction company? And how can cement, sand and water be turned into a real workpiece? Students from Gemeinschaftliche Sekundarschule Burbach-Neunkirchen found out during the Open Companies Day on 16 April 2026.

The career orientation format took place in Burbach for the second time. This year, it brought together one school, three Year 9 classes, around 90 students and 16 training companies from a wide range of sectors – from industry, construction and skilled trades to retail and municipal services. Each student gained practical insights into two different training companies.

Experiencing HERING first-hand

The HERING Group also opened its doors and showed how varied training in the construction industry can be. Seven students and one teacher visited the HERING campus in Burbach-Holzhausen and gained exciting insights into the company. After a warm welcome in the entrance area, a safety briefing and the distribution of protective caps, the group set off on a tour of the campus. Their destination was the precast concrete plant – the place where planning, materials and craftsmanship come together to create real building components.

Mixing, casting and experiencing concrete

After a brief introduction to various career profiles, it was time for the practical part. The students were invited to try out concrete processing for themselves. Under guidance, they mixed a cement-sand mixture in a ratio of 1:3 with water. They quickly discovered that achieving the right consistency requires a good feel for the material. The mixture was then poured into special rubber moulds. After around 20 minutes of waiting, the most exciting moment arrived: demoulding. The result was a set of small concrete figures shaped like herrings – a fitting souvenir of an informative and hands-on day at HERING.

The Open Companies Day once again showed how valuable career orientation on site can be. After all, anyone who wants to truly understand training opportunities needs to experience them, try things out and ask questions.

Our conclusion: training at HERING is diverse, practical and anything but dry – even though concrete naturally plays an important role.
