GAP YEAR at HERING – A Personal Experience Report

In the first quarter of this year, HERING hosted the GAP YEAR programme organised by Südwestfalen Agentur for the first time. The programme gives young people the opportunity to gain real work experience, explore different career paths through three internships and actively shape their own future.

One of the participants was Emma, who spent three months gaining insights into various departments at HERING. In her personal experience report, she shares impressions from her time at the company and explains what impressed her most.

Valuable insights into different business areas

During my internship at HERING, I had the opportunity to gain many exciting insights into the company’s different business areas. I got to know various departments, including HERING Sanikonzept, HERING Infrastruktursysteme, HERING Architectural Concrete and HERING Bahnbau. This gave me a very good overview of the diverse markets and fields of activity in which HERING operates.

A special highlight for me was being able to take part in several construction site visits. This allowed me not only to learn about the theoretical processes in the office, but also to experience their practical implementation directly on site. It was exciting to see how plans become real structures or how new tracks are created in railway construction.

I was also able to actively contribute in the HERING Infrastruktursysteme division. There, I had the opportunity to work on a small project of my own and design a complete platform module myself. I was very well guided and supported by a colleague throughout the process, which made the task especially enjoyable.

In the HERING Sanikonzept division, I was also introduced to the STRAKON software. The insights into this programme were particularly valuable for me, as I will be able to use it during my studies and beyond.
 

Orientation, practical experience and new perspectives


Emma’s GAP YEAR at HERING showed her how varied working life can be in a diverse construction and infrastructure company. Through a combination of insights into different business areas, practical experience and personal support, she was able to gain valuable impressions for her professional orientation.

We are delighted to have been part of the Südwestfalen Agentur’s GAP YEAR programme and to offer young people like Emma exciting perspectives for their future.
