ASCA® – Innovative OPV Technology for Architecture & Sustainable Energy

ASCA® GmbH & Co. KG is part of the HERING Group and a global leader in organic photovoltaic (OPV) technology “Made in Germany”, with headquarters and production facilities in Kitzingen, Germany.

What is ASCA® Technology?

ASCA® is based on organic photovoltaics (OPV) – an advanced thin-film solar technology that differs significantly from conventional crystalline solar modules:

  • Flexible and lightweight: OPV films are extremely light (< 500 g/m²), flexible and can be curved, rolled or shaped to suit a wide range of applications.
  • Transparency & design freedom: Available in varying levels of transparency and colour, they offer maximum design flexibility – ideal for architecturally demanding surfaces.
  • Versatile integration: ASCA® modules can be integrated into glass, metal, textile membranes, plastics or other façade materials, both in new builds and refurbishment projects.
  • Efficient in low-light conditions: The technology generates energy even at low light intensity, for example under cloudy skies or indoors.

Technology & System Integration

ASCA® not only produces OPV base films but also offers customised system integration, including electrical and mechanical adaptation to specific applications such as façades, canopy systems or mobility solutions. Modules are designed and manufactured to meet individual project requirements, using laser structuring and tailored to virtually any size or shape.

Sustainability & Environmental Benefits

ASCA® technology features a very short energy payback time (EPBT) compared to conventional photovoltaic systems, meaning that the energy generated quickly exceeds the energy required for production.

Additional sustainability benefits include:

  • Manufactured without rare earths or toxic materials
  • Fully recyclable within standard plastic recycling processes
  • Resource-efficient in both production and material usage
  • Applications – Where Architecture Meets Energy

ASCA® technology enables new possibilities for energy-generating building envelopes and sustainable construction projects:

  • Building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV): OPV films integrated into façades, glass elements or shading systems, generating electricity without compromising design.
  • Architectural façade solutions: Energy-producing façades, media façades or visually striking structures with integrated solar functionality.
  • Mobility & smart products: Flexible energy solutions for vehicles, urban furniture and connected products.

Practical examples demonstrate the integration of OPV elements into façade systems or as autonomous energy sources for furniture and mobile applications.

Strategic Importance for the HERING Group

Through its involvement in ASCA®, the HERING Group expands its portfolio with a forward-looking photovoltaic technology. This enables sustainable energy components to be seamlessly integrated into construction and architectural processes – from design-driven façade solutions to energy-autonomous infrastructure elements.

The combination of traditional construction expertise and OPV innovation positions ASCA® as a key technology for advancing the energy transition within the construction sector of the HERING Group.
