Civil Engineering at the Heart of the Modernisation
The civil engineering work carried out by HERING Bahnbau GmbH was at the centre of the project. The transport station, the platforms and the approximately 180-metre-long pedestrian underpass were all modernised. The aim was to combine functionality, improved quality of stay and modern design — creating a station that meets the requirements of contemporary mobility.
Modern Platforms with a New Appearance
The platforms were extensively modernised and put back into operation in 2021 and 2022.
A particular highlight is the two new “Evolution 2020” platform roofs by HERING Systeme. They give the station a contemporary appearance while also meeting the high functional requirements of daily rail operations.
Accessibility Consistently Implemented
A special focus of the project was on full accessibility. Tactile guidance strips and attention fields make orientation easier for visually impaired passengers. The concept is complemented by Braille on handrails as well as high-contrast floor and wall designs. As a result, Hanau Central Station is now more comfortable, safer and more accessible for all passengers.
Completely Redesigned Pedestrian Underpass
One of the central elements of the project is the completely renewed pedestrian underpass. It connects Auheimer Straße with all platforms of the central station and has been extensively modernised. As part of the works, new stairways and lifts were installed, ramp areas were repaired, and floor and wall surfaces were renewed. The result is a brighter, more modern and significantly more comfortable access route for passengers.
When Infrastructure Meets Art
In addition to the technical modernisation, the redesigned underpass also sets new standards in terms of design. Modern wall tiles and an impressive illuminated glass installation create a special atmosphere and transform the passageway into a genuine experience space. The artwork was realised by HERING Infrastructure Systems and is based on a creative concept by Tabea Wolf and Thea Griep, graduates of the Brüder-Grimm-Berufsakademie Hanau.
The artists made Hanau’s diversity visible: photographic motifs from city life, defining places and typical everyday scenes — including rowing, which is characteristic of Hanau — were turned into multi-layered collages. Transparent layers and integrated lighting create a fascinating overall impression, especially in the evening hours, with a strong emotional impact.
Ceremonial Completion of a Special Project
The modernisation project was officially completed with an opening ceremony on 12 May 2026. Representatives from politics, transport and infrastructure particularly recognised the improvements achieved in accessibility, quality of stay and modern infrastructure. The successful completion of the project once again underlines the HERING Group’s expertise in demanding infrastructure projects and makes an important contribution to the sustainable development of Hanau as a station location.
Special thanks go to all employees and project partners whose commitment, expertise and team spirit made this major project possible over many years.
