In the framework of the two construction projects Weidkamp and Stolberg/Marktstraße in Essen, we have been commissioned by the municipal transport service company VIA Verkehrsgesellschaft to carry out works in inner-city local public transport.
At Stolbergstraße, approximately 60 m of groove track timber sills (Dresden track construction system) were installed. At Marktstraße (130 m) and Weidkamp (360 m), groove tracks were installed “on flat steel sills with insulating rail casing” on an existing sub-construction (pitched stonework). The track panels were delivered in a pre-assembled condition on flat steel sills.
Whereas the Stolbergstraße section did not pose problems as a result of the Dresden track construction system, with which we are familiar, the groove tracks with flat steel sills did face us with a number of challenges. Due to the flat steel sills used (no steering track rod), the track grids made available by the customer did not provide stability and had to be handled with the greatest possible caution already during the process of unloading from the lorry.
The advantages of the system surely lie in its costs, but also in the environment-friendly full insulation for groove tracks.
