Hering exhibit presented at the Expo 2010 in Shanghai
The world exhibition EXPO 2010 was held from the 1st of May till the 31st of October, 2010, in Shanghai, the metropolis of millions. The exhibition can proudly boast of a record participation. A total of 189 countries and 57 organisations took part in the exhibition. The 73 million visitors made it the largest world fair of all times. The motto of the exhibition was “Better City, Better Life”.
The German pavilion was also dedicated to life in the city. Its name “balancity” is comprised of the words “Balance” and “City” and, as the name suggests, describes a city in balance. Visitors were able to walk through a City of ideas”, through variously arranged urban settings, which presented a number of themes. Phrased in the language of architects, an exciting alternation between interior and exterior space, of shadow and light, of built and natural, of town and country.
One theme under many in “balancity” was dedicated to innovative materials made in Germany. And this is precisely where Hering presented its exhibit: A cylinder made of textile-reinforced concrete. Textile-reinforced concrete was developed in Germany and Hering is counted among the market-leading companies in the production of textile-reinforced concrete.
Prior to the Expo, “Milla and Partner”, the agency responsible for the organisation and arrangement of the German Pavilion, approached Hering to ask if the company would be interested in providing such an exhibit. The Hering company declared that it would be delighted to do so.
The exact geometry of the cylinder was specified by “Milla und Partner”. Due to the fact that the cylinder was required to feature a fixed inner and outer radius, special casing pipes made of plastic were used. The plastic pipes were filled with a special, fine-grained concrete matrix and the optical appearance was refined by acid treatment performed on the surface of the material.
