As part of the process of reopening the route to Meinerzhagen, the entire railway station in Gummersbach is being rebuilt. The intention is that the new platform should be accessible on both sides and be completely covered by a roof. This was achieved using a Hering platform roof of the Bodenheim light type. Hering completed the platform roof and a canopy roof in the entrance area to the underpass in July 2014.
The platform roof, which covers the central platform with a ramp and a staircase leading up to it, is around 90 m long and has a conical profile. Mention should also be made of the extreme curve in the platform, which also made it necessary for the edge of the roof to have a polygonal design. In order to meet the tight timetable, the crane-mounted assembly of the steel structure had to be carried out with the station still operating in very short shutdown periods in the space of just two weeks.
Since the end of July, the remaining work to be carried out on the Bodenheim light platform roof has been completed and passengers can now begin their train journeys nice and dry.
