Renovation of tracks and points for Broich Depot, Mülheim an der Ruhr

Repair and assembly hall of the Mülheim Transport Company

The subject matter of this building project was the renovation of a total of 5 connected grooved rail turnouts, including junctions with 100 m grooved rail track in the repair and assembly hall of the Mülheim Transport Company.

The tracks and points were laid on an existing concrete slab, aligned and then grouted with fast-setting mortar. The old points and tracks had first to be dismounted, the concrete slab cleaned and the new points and tracks had to be installed provisionally in order to be able to temporarily resume tram traffic after the operational pause. The construction stages were matched according to the daily output.

A new empty conduit route was installed additionally by Hering Bahnbau alongside the constructed track system and each point was individually piped and connected. The new empty conduit route also covers points and tracks, which were not rebuilt in the course of this building project.  Accordingly signal boxes were also exposed for piping. In total an empty cable conduit route of 120 m was created, 1 track crossing was realised and 7 new junction boxes were installed. Two existing signal masts were also rebuilt and connected to the new route. The required cables (approx. 1,000 m) for commissioning of the points were pulled in.

The new track area was sealed with concrete, binder and mastic asphalt (approx. 650 m²). In the track curves the tracks were tempered and the entire track system was reground.
