The complete "Wehrhahnlinie Düsseldorf" project is a major inner-city project which involves the replacement of several overground tram lines and which will greatly relieve the amount of traffic in the city centre from 2015.
The new 3.5 km section of urban railway with six stations and two overground stops runs underground from the Bilk suburban railway station to the Wehrhahn suburban railway station and essentially follows the street routes of Elisabethstraße / Kasernenstraße and Schadowstraße / Am Wehrhahn. The new tunnel system links up at the existing Heinrich-Heine-Allee subway station. Here there is a section of tunnel which was constructed when this station was built and is around 152 m long.
Construction work
As part of the Wehrhahnlinie project, changes to the current traffic situation are required for the purpose of creating the subway stations with an open design and for the purpose of laying the supply and waste disposal pipelines. The construction work under the main contract includes realigning the tracks and overhead line equipment in the area of the individual subway stations. This is why at the overground stops different traffic phases operate on a constant basis. The different traffic phases are what enable progress to be made on the excavation of the construction pit for the respective subway stations.
The "Wehrhahnlinie" construction project comprises, through the various traffic phases, the construction of 6,137 m of tracks, 20 sets of points and 7 junctions, including demolition work. In October 2014, the final tracks for the completion of the skeleton construction work for the stations were laid by Hering in two subprojects.
Construction period
Trial operation by RHEINBAHN starting in 2015, expected to start operating fully at the end of 2015.
